I am Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Roehampton, London, where I am the Programme Director for the MSc in Applied Cognitive Neuroscience.

I undertake research examining the cognitive deficits and their neural mechanisms that promote both substance use- and mood disorders (with a particular emphasis on emotion dysregulation and maladaptive decision-making), with a view to alleviating these deficits via cognitive neuroscience techniques such as non-invasive brain stimulation.

I received my PhD from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, supervised by Professors Jon Roiser and Peter Dayan. This work explored the neural and neurochemical mechanisms of maladaptive decision-making in depression.

I subsequently undertook postdoctoral training at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), in the laboratory of Professor Edythe London. Here I examined the neural and neurochemical mechanisms of cigarette smoking behaviours, and of the withdrawal symptoms that promote these behaviours.

I welcome enquiries from prospective MSc and PhD students (please feel free to email me at paul.faulkner@roehampton.ac.uk).
